Basic Old Fashioned Mashed Potato Recipe

There is no doubt a lot of mashed potatoes get consumed with special meals. Here is a recipe for a good old fashioned method to create that perfect dish.

Ingredients

8 medium sized yukon gold potatoes, peeled and quartered
4-6 Tablespoons butter (or more)
1-2 cups milk (or cream for extra delicious flavor)
salt and pepper to taste

Makes 6-8 servings

Directions

Peel and wash the potatoes. Place them into a large pot and cover with cold water.

Bring to a boil and let the potatoes cook until they are tender.

Time will vary with potato size. Test by spearing the potatoes with a sharp paring knife.

Once tender, drain them in a colandar and let them steam.

The more steam is gone, the more the potatoes will absorb the milk.

While the potatoes are steaming, heat the butter and milk over low temperature in the same pot you cooked the potatoes in. The exact amount of butter and milk will vary with the size of the potatoes you cooked and your own personal preference as to how creamy you want them.

Shut off as soon as heated. Don't boil.

Add the steamed potatoes and mash, either with a hand potato masher or a hand mixer.

Season with salt and pepper to taste and add more butter if necessary for the perfect flavor.

Serve hot.
