Preheat oven to 374ºF
Grease muffin cups or line with paper muffin liners.
In a small bowl, combine buttermilk and baking soda; set aside.
In another bowl, combine flour and salt; set aside.
Using an electric mixer or stand mixer, cream together butter and sugar.
Add the egg and beat well.
Mix in the buttermilk and soda mixture, then add the molasses and bran.
Blend everything together until well combined.
Gently fold in the flour and salt mixture, being careful not to over mix.
Fold in raisins, if using.
Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of a muffin come out clean.
Allow to cool for 5 minutes before removing from muffin.
Serve warm with a pat of butter and your favourite jam
