Dinner Rolls Recipe

This homemade dinner rolls recipe are the perfect pairing to many meals, but especially a hearty homemade soup. There is also an optional garlic butter recipe.

Ingredients

4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
* This is equivalent to 2 packages.
1/3 cup warm water
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter
2 teaspoons salt
1 cup scalded milk
2 eggs
4 1/ - 5 cups all purpose flour
(Makes 15-18 rolls)

Garlic Butter (optional)

1/4 cup butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon minced garlic
2 teaspoons finely chopped herbs (parsley, oregano, chives)
3/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

In a large bowl add the warm water and yeast, and let sit for 5 minutes.

Over the stove in a small saucepan, scald the milk.

In another large mixing bowl combine sugar, butter, salt and milk.

Let the mixture cool to lukewarm.

Once cool, stir in eggs and yeast.

Gradually add flour to form a stiff dough, beating well after each addition. Only add as much as you need so that the dough is no longer sticky.

Knead the dough on a floured surface until it is a smooth ball (about 5-8 minutes).

Cover the ball of dough and let it rise in a warm place until it is doubled in size (about 1 hour).

Punch down the dough, and then cover again, letting it rise for another hour or until it has about doubled again.

Preheat oven to 350F.

Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking tray.

To form even rolls, cut the dough in half. Continue dividing each section in half until you have 16-18 rolls.

Place rolls side by side in your tray and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.

Optional: In the meanwhile prepare the garlic herb butter.

Mix together 1/4 cup butter with 2 teaspoons minced garlic, salt and 2 teaspoons chopped herbs.

When the rolls come out of the oven, brush the garlic butter over top and serve warm.
