Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Line a 9x13 pan with parchment paper, and grease the paper with butter.
Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat, then stir in cocoa.
Remove from heat.
Mix in sugar and vanilla then mix in eggs one at a time.
Stir in remaining ingredients then stir in nuts.
Pour into the prepared baking pan.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Cool completely, flip pan and peel away parchment paper.
Flip back over and put onto a cooling rack.
Cut the cake into checkerboard squares.
Dust the checkerboard patter on with confectioners.
The easiest way is to use a cake lifter, and remove the 'white' piece, put onto a small plate, sift the confectioners' sugar on, and replace the piece to its spot in the checkerboard pattern.
