This meatball sub sandwich recipe is made with freshly cooked meatballs, a little spaghetti sauce to flavor them and is assembled and broiled so the cheese will be golden brown.
Preheat oven to 450F.
Have ready a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper.
Slice the tops off the buns, creating a v-indent in the buns that will hold the meatballs.
Crumble the bun tops into a large mixing bowl.
Add the meat, egg, basil, salt and pepper.
Shape meat mixture into 16 small meatballs.
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
Add the meatballs and cook until cooked through. Add the spaghetti sauce to the meatballs and stir gently to coat. Turn off the heat.
Place the 4 buns onto the lined baking sheet and place into the preheated oven for 5 minutes to lightly toast the buns.
Remove from the oven and divide the meatballs into the buns. Spoon the sauce on each to coat.
Divide and sprinkle on both cheeses.
Place back into the oven.
Turn on broiler and broil for about 5 minutes or less, until cheese is melted and bubbly.
Keep an eye on them while doing this so you do not burn them.
Serve right away.
