This meatball submarine sandwich recipe would be perfect for a weekend "game" meal. Hearty and delicious!
Meatballs
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
In a mixing bowl combine the bread crumbs with the water. Stir to moisten the crumbs.
Add the beef, parmesan cheese, egg, oregano, grated onion, garlic powder and pepper.
Mix with a wooden spoon to start, then using clean hand, work the mixture together.
Form 24 even sized meatballs placing them onto the prepared baking sheet as you go.
Place the meatballs into the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and no pink shows.
When the meatballs have cooked through, turn the oen on to broil to brown up the outsides a little more.
Broil for a few minutes, then remove the baking tray onto a cooling pad beside the stovetop.
Sauce
Put the sauce into a large pot on the stovetop and
using low to medium heat, warm up the sauce. Season to taste.
Gently spoon each meatball off the baking sheet and into the pot of warm sauce.
Bring to a boil, then turn off.
Cut each bun in half, and toast the buns in the oven.
Assemble the submarine sandwiches.
On the bottom half of the bun place the lettuce, red peppers, onions and pickles.
Use a slotted spoon to place the hamburger balls next, drizzle a little sauce.
Cover the hot meatballs with finely sliced cheese. The heat from the meatballs should just slightly melt the cheese.
Top with tomato slices, pickled yellow peppers, olives and finally the top.
You can also put any condiments you like, such as mayonnaise. Build it to suit your taste.
