This apple pear crumble recipe adds another level of flavor by using pears along with the traditional apple type of recipe.
Filling
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Grease a ceramic baking dish with butter.
Peel, quarter, cut out the seeds and slice the pears and the apples into thin pieces and put them into a large mixing bowl.
In a small bowl, stir together the lemon juice, sugar, raisins, nutmeg and cinnamon. Pour this mixture over the sliced pears and apples and gently toss to cover the fruit.
Transfer the prepared pears and apples to the baking dish.
Crumble
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt and spices.
Using your fingertips or a pastry cutter combine the butter into the flour mixture until it makes a coarse crumbly mixture. Sprinkle on the ice water and mix the crumble mixture until it holds together and forms small clumps.
Mix in the oatmeal in and if too gooey, add a little extra oatmeal. You want a nice lumpy texture for the crumble.
Scatter the topping onto the fruit in the baking dish. Try to cover nice and evenly.
Place into the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes or until the topping is brown and crispy and you see the juice is bubbling up at the edges.
Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 20 minutes before serving.
Delicious with a scoop of ice cream.
