To prepare your workspace, begin by laying out a flat plate or work surface with some thick paper and paper towels. This will be used to drain the donuts.
Prepare another flat clean surface with flour for kneading your dough.
Finally, prepare a shallow plate with an inch of flour.
Preheat oil in a deep fryer to 375F.
In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Mix butter until crumbly and then stir in milk and egg to create a dough.
Take dough and knead lightly on floured surface.
Press dough down into 1/4 inch thickness.
Dip a doughnut cutter in flour and then use to cut-out doughnuts. Carefully drop doughnuts into hot oil.
Fry, turning once, for about 3 minutes or until golden brown.
Use tongs to transfer donuts on prepared paper towels.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar or cinnamon-sugar mixture.
