Directions
Meatballs
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
- Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
- In a mixing bowl combine the bread crumbs with the water. Stir to moisten the crumbs.
- Add the beef, parmesan cheese, egg, oregano, grated onion, garlic powder and pepper.
- Mix with a wooden spoon to start, then using clean hand, work the mixture together.
- Form 24 even sized meatballs placing them onto the prepared baking sheet as you go.
- Place the meatballs into the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and no pink shows.
- When the meatballs have cooked through, turn the oen on to broil to brown up the outsides a little more.
- Broil for a few minutes, then remove the baking tray onto a cooling pad beside the stovetop.
Sauce
- Put the sauce into a large pot on the stovetop and using low to medium heat, warm up the sauce. Season to taste.
- Gently spoon each meatball off the baking sheet and into the pot of warm sauce.
- Bring to a boil, then turn off.
- Cut each bun in half, and toast the buns in the oven.
- Assemble the submarine sandwiches.
- On the bottom half of the bun place the lettuce, red peppers, onions and pickles.
- Use a slotted spoon to place the hamburger balls next, drizzle a little sauce.
- Cover the hot meatballs with finely sliced cheese. The heat from the meatballs should just slightly melt the cheese.
- Top with tomato slices, pickled yellow peppers, olives and finally the top.
- You can also put any condiments you like, such as mayonnaise. Build it to suit your taste.
